Michigan State Offers Scholarship to Rising WR from Oklahoma

Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith has officially made an offer to an up-and-coming wide receiver from Oklahoma.

Michigan State football joins the long list of other programs offering scholarships to one of the top recruits in the 2026 recruiting class a scholarship.

After making multiple offers to unranked players and receiving very few offers from other programs, the Spartans found an unranked player with so much potential that he already has many offers from prominent football programs nationwide.

The Spartans offered a scholarship to wide receiver Mason James of Norman, Oklahoma. The soon-to-be junior recently announced his scholarship offer from Michigan State on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Blessed to have earned an offer from Michigan State University,” James said.

In 12 games as a sophomore in high school, James registered 17 touchdowns and accounted for a total of 1,135 yards. He helped lead his team to the second round of the state playoffs last season.

James was named the Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference Wide Receiver of the Year, an impressive accomplishment for a sophomore.  The 5-foot-11, 170-pound athlete has shown the ability to play both sides of the ball but will likely primarily focus on the offensive side of things at the collegiate level. While James doesn’t have the most significant build, whatever program he selects will almost certainly have a plan in store to develop the receiver physically and mentally.

This seems to be the plan that most of the recruits the Spartans have prioritized.

Michigan State is one of almost 20 schools that have offered James a scholarship. According to 247Sports, the Spartans join programs such as Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Nebraska, SMU, Washington, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor and Kansas State, among others. The interest James has received from so many other programs proves his talent surpasses a star rating or lack thereof.

Although he still has two seasons of high school football left, James' potential has been enough to garner national attention.

James may not be ranked nationally, but in college football, stars only mean so much. Spartans coach Jonathan Smith is betting on his and his coaching staff's ability to get the most out of the recruits they are able to secure. However, they will have to be creative in finding ways to recruit those recruits, as the most talented recruits Michigan State has offered scholarships to are undoubtedly considering other notable programs in college football.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
