MSU OC Brian Lindgren Talks Teaching New Offense

Michigan State offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren is installing a new system with a new team.

Michigan State offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren joined head coach Jonathan Smith from Oregon State with the goal of returning the Spartans to the top of the Big Ten conference.

With in-state rival Michigan's recent success at the national level and an expanded Big Ten -- one that will see more offense than ever before with the likes of USC, Oregon and Washington -- no time is more important when it comes to installing a high-powered offense.

Last season, the Spartans ranked near the bottom of the FBS in most offensive categories, while the Beavers -- under Lindgren -- were near the top of those offensive categories and ahead of national champion Michigan, Ohio State and Alabama in total offense.

Lindgren is bringing that offense to Michigan State. Outside of three former OSU players -- quarterback Aidan Chiles, tight end Jack Velling and offensive lineman Tanner Miller -- the offense will require a steep learning curve.

Smith told media members on April 2 that he was happy with how the group was adapting.

"We've been pleased with the understanding," he said. " ... Brand-new offense, a lot thrown at them, and they've handled that well. So there's been progress."

In a post-practice media availability Thursday, Lindgren discussed implementing his offense to his new team.

"It's fun to see the guys' excitement out of it," Lindgren said. "We are trying to sell it as there are a lot of opportunities to make plays, create explosives, score points and have fun doing it. It has been really cool -- I think because we brought four coaches that have been doing this offense for a while -- and then so many guys who are just learning it for the first time.

"You got to remember -- hey this is this guy's first time running this play. Sometimes our expectation might be a little too high for the first time he's doing it -- but the guys have good attitudes [...] and you can see the improvement from practice one to where we are at right now for sure."

Lindgren has plenty to work with -- a talented quarterback in Aidan Chiles, a full running back room and numerous options at wide receiver. He also has Velling at tight end.

Lindgren will have the rest of spring practices to get his offense up to speed before summer -- and all eyes will be watching come autumn.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
