What Mississippi State DL Coach David Turner Said About The Team Ahead Of Week 3 LSU Matchup

In this story:
Coming off of a 31-24 overtime win over the Arizona Wildcats, Mississippi State football (2-0) looks to remain undefeated as they take on the LSU Tigers next on the schedule.
Mississippi State defensive line coach David Turner met with the media ahead of the matchup.
"We’re improving. Kind of mix and matching. Had a couple of guys banged up. I’ve got to make myself rotate some guys more, but they’re working hard," Turner explained.
"Had a good practice today. They seemed to be amped up a little big, first SEC game and having it at home makes a big difference. We have to figure out a way to come out strong and get after these guys."
With this weekend being the SEC opener for MSU, there is a lot to prepare for and be aware of before playing in conference. While the team has secured two wins this season, LSU will be a different challenge for them.
With what they've shown so far, the defense will definitely give LSU's offense a challenge considering the defensive success displayed against Arizona last week.
After seeing senior defensive tackle Nathan Pickering tackle three times successfully against Southeastern Louisiana and three quarterback rushes, Pickering has a series where he takes over on the defensive line, Turner also shared his thoughts about this.
"I’d like to see him take over the whole game, not just a series. He’s a guy who has the talent and ability to do that. We talk all the time about being consistent. Saturday, he probably played too many plays and that’s on me. But he’s a work in progress. He comes every day and wants to learn. He wants to be coached. And that’s half the battle. He’s gonna be a little more consistent. We need to make sure I spell him and get him off the field. But he’s coming along."
Along with Pickering, a few other players have had huge contributions to the defensive line. One of these stars is defensive lineman Eric Taylor, who is a new addition to the Bulldogs.
After making his MSU career debut against Southeastern Louisiana, Taylor secured a tackle. Turner shared his thoughts on what he has seen in Taylor's performance.
"Some good and some bad." Turner said "He actually plays a little bit better than he practices. So, that’s good. Injuries are part of the game. One man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity. He has an opportunity now. Hopefully, he’ll take full advantage of it and be ready to go with some good snaps on Saturday."
Another new defensive lineman who made his MSU debut this season is Trevion Williams. This redshirt freshman made one season appearance and is working to make more. Turner shared his thoughts on how well Williams has been performing during practice.
"Same thing," Turner said. "He just needs repetition. He’s young. He’s strong and he has ability. He has all the things you need to be good. He needs game reps."
With Matt Brock leading the defense with Turner at his side, the Bulldogs are shaping up well to keep the opposing offense from succeeding.
