Mississippi State Football: What The Quarterback Room Brings To The Table Ahead Of The Season

After a long offseason, the start of the 2023 campaign is on the horizon for the Mississippi State Bulldogs with the team set to open up the schedule against Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 2.

Familiar faces are returning to the locker room with Will Rogers, Asher Morgan, and Jake Weir in the fold.

Some promising new faces to also look for are freshman four-star recruit Chris Parson and Vanderbilt transfer Mike Wright -- two players who very much have starting potential at some point and bring a lot to the table as both passers and runners.

Will Rogers is coming off a down season compared to his sophomore year, but he still holds reign of the starting position. The senior will be starting for his third consecutive season and looks to enter Heisman talks. If he is to be in those conversations of being one of the better quarterbacks in the nation, he will need to take his running game to another level.

One of the better mobile quarterbacks that was picked up by State in the portal was Mike Wright. A familiar foe now turned Bulldog was a team captain for Vanderbilt in his junior year while also starting six out of the ten games he played.

His dynamic running brings new options to an offense that struggled to get off the field on fourth down due to the lack of special teams success that plagued the team all season long.

The newest and youngest addition to the room is freshman Chris Parson.

The four-star, dual-threat could bring a new wrinkle to the offense with his elusiveness and his sneaky speed when managing the pocket. Coming out of high school he was ranked the No. 30 quarterback in the country and he models his game after NFL quarterback Jalen Hurts. He will most likely be redshirted this year to prepare to take over the starting position next season.

The last two players in the room are Morgan and Weir. Both players were redshirted last year and have the most question marks surrounding them as names that look to viable scout team quarterbacks at best.

Looking at the room overall, there's no question that it's a deep one, and it will be interesting to see how things play out at the starting position both this season and in the coming years.
