Mississippi State vs. South Carolina: Looking Into The All-Time Series

How things have shaken out throughout the history of the meetings between Mississippi State and South Carolina.

Mississippi State (2-1) and South Carolina (2-1) meet Saturday evening in a game in which both teams are looking to bounce back from a loss, while also aiming to take their first SEC victory of the 2023 season.

This will mark the 17th time the two teams have met as South Carolina leads the all-time series with an overall record of 9-7 in games against MSU.

The Bulldogs won the most recent matchup against the Gamecocks, recording a 27-14 victory in Starkville, Mississippi back on Sept. 10 in 2016. As the fact that game was over seven years ago, these two squads meet sparingly.

In the win, star quarterback Nick Fitzgerald rushed 17 times for 195 yards and also passed for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mississippi State (1-1) registered its first win of the season after it was upset by South Alabama in the previous week.

It marked State's first victory over South Carolina since 1999, when the Bulldogs recorded a 17-0 shutout on their home turf. The largest margin of victory the Bulldogs ever put up on the Gamecocks was 38-0 in 1998, while South Carolina's biggest win over MSU with 65-39 in 1995.

MSU held a four-game winning streak, its longest ever over South Carolina, from 1996-1999. South Carolina's longest winning streak over MSU last seven games from 2000-2013.

Things look a lot different for both teams this time around with completely different coaching staffs and a fully overturned roster. South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer heads into his third season in his position with the Gamecocks, while MSU head coach Zach Arnett continues through his first season in his place since he was promoted from defensive coordinator after the unexpected passing of the legendary Mike Leach.

It will be interesting to see who comes out on top when the Bulldogs and the Gamecocks kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT in Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday.
