Injury Updates But No Quarterback Announcement Thursday From Matt Rhule

Huskers prepare for rainy contest Saturday against Louisiana Tech

Will it be Heinrich Haarberg or Jeff Sims? To nobody's surprise, Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule wasn't tipping his hand Thursday about who will start at quarterback Saturday against Louisiana Tech.

Sims, who got the first two starts before injuring an ankle Sept. 9 in game 3 against Colorado, has had a good week of practice, Rhule said. "Moved around well. Threw the ball really well. Coming off an injury like that, I can't say that he's maybe 100 percent, but you don't notice that there's anything wrong with him when he plays."

As with any position, he said, it boils down to "what we need to do this week and who gives us the best chance to win."

Freshman defensive lineman Cameron Lenhardt injured an ankle against Northern Illinois, and his status for Saturday against Louisiana Tech probably will be a game-time decision. Sophomore D-lineman Blaise Gunnerson is "full go" after a minor injury Saturday.

With Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson out for the season, running backs coach E.J. Barthel has been "working overtime" getting Anthony Grant's top backups -- Emmett Johnson and Kwinten Ives -- up to speed. Rhule said recognizing and picking up blitzes will be crucial for whoever's in the backfield against the Bulldogs and their "great blitz package."

Rainy weather is expected Saturday, and the Huskers did some wet-ball drills during Wednesday evening's practice to help prepare for the conditions.
