Hannah Hidalgo Career High Leads Notre Dame To 85-48 Win Over Georgia Tech
Atlanta, Ga. -- If a game was ever over before it started it was Thursday’s 85-48 Notre Dame win over Georgia Tech. The Fighting Irish (16-4, 6-3 ACC) used a 26-0 run in the first half to pound the Yellow Jackets (13-9, 4-6) into submission to roll to a second consecutive victory.
Hannah Hidalgo, who had just reached a new career-high with 34 points in last Saturday’s upset win over UConn, one-upped that with 35 points. The freshman point guard added eight assists and six steals in Notre Dame’s lopsided victory. She has topped 30 points four times this season. The Irish led the game 73-31 in the fourth quarter, with Hidalgo matching Georgia Tech’s points with 31 of her own.
The game was tied 9-9 before the Fighting Irish closed the first quarter with a 19-0 run before scoring the first seven points of the second quarter. After going scoreless against UConn, Kylee Watson scored nine of her season-best 19 points in the first five minutes of the game. It was her first double figure game since Jan. 11 against Boston College.
Watson’s inside game and Hidalgo’s steals helped the Irish to a dominant 56-18 advantage in the paint. The senior and freshman were the only Irish players to score in double figures, but five other Irish teammates scored in the game. Watson just missed a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Irish were 11 for 18 from the field in the first quarter and matched that number again in the third quarter. They hit 36 of 69 shots (52%) overall, including 4 of 17 from 3-point range.
Sonia Citron hit two of those 3s in the first quarter but finished with eight points. She had scored in double figures in her first 10 games of the season. The junior guard pulled down eight rebounds as well.
