It’s an open period in the football recruiting world, which means Notre Dame's football staff is on the road visiting the schools of some of the country’s top prospects this week. On Wednesday the Notre Dame coaches, including Marcus Freeman, Mike Denbrock, Gino Guidugli, Mike Brown and Mike Mickens, were out Newbury Park (Calif.) High School to check in on star 2026 quarterback Brady Smigiel.

Communication is limited on these visits, more focusing on talking to coaches, school staff members and everyone around the recruit. Coaches also can sometimes see the players work out, which they did with Smigiel. In fact, there were several schools out there to see the elite signal caller.

"The Notre Dame coaches were out there to see me in action,” Smigiel told Irish Breakdown. "There were five coaches, including Marcus Freeman. It was exciting to see them out there.

"Oklahoma, Michigan, Penn State and UNLV were also there. It was a great opportunity for the team to get exposure.”

The feedback for Smigiel was all good according to his coach. He is now heading to South Bend this weekend for the first time. The California native was offered by Notre Dame back in May, which was a busy month for him. Smigiel now has the chance to get to know the program and coaches quickly.

"I’m going to be out there this weekend,” Smigiel said. "I’m leaving on Friday. I’m excited to get up to Notre Dame.”

The 6-4, 205-pound signal caller put together an outstanding season as a sophomore in 2023. In 14 games, Smigiel threw for 4.222 yards and 52 touchdowns. He also added two more scores on the ground, helping lead the Panthers to a 10-4 overall record.

Smigiel is considered as a five-star recruit on the 247Sports Composite ranking, currently sitting as the No. 21 overall player and No. 2 quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class. Both 247Sports and Rivals have him rated as a top 40 overall player, ranking at No. 31 and No. 14 respectively.

His offer list is as impressive as Smigiel’s stats and current rankings. Some of Smigiel’s top offers currently include the Irish, Georgia, Michigan, Miami, Florida State, Penn State, Oregon, Ole Miss, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Utah, Arizona, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Arizona State, Colorado, Boston College, Kansas and Indiana among others.
