Ohio State Buckeyes Guard Jacy Sheldon Selected By Dallas Wings With No. 5 in WNBA draft

The Ohio State Buckeyes guard Jacy Sheldon is on her way to the Lone Star State

The Ohio State Buckeyes have their first player off the board.

Graduate guard Jacy Sheldon was selected No. 5 to the Dallas Wings at Monday’s WNBA draft.

Sheldon led the Buckeyes to a regular season Big Ten conference title, the second of Sheldon’s career. The Buckeyes split the honor with Iowa in 2022.

Sheldon is the first, first-round pick for the Buckeyes since the Indiana Fever drafted Kelsey Mitchell at No. 2 overall in 2018.

The Dublin, Ohio, native averaged a team-high 17.8 points and 3.8 assists on her way to earning an Associated Press All-American Second Team selection. Sheldon was also named to the All-Conference First Team for the second time.

A season after playing just 13 total games, including just eight regular season games, Sheldon bounced back and led the Buckeyes to multiple top-25 victories, including an overtime thriller against No. 1 pick Caitlin Clark and Iowa, a five-point win against Indiana, a 20-point blowout over No. 4-pick Rickea Jackson and Tennessee, and a big win over Penn State.

However, Sheldon’s impact was not just on the offensive end — along with likely first-or-second round selection Celeste Taylor, the two led a suffocating full-court press in the backcourt. The one-time All-conference Defensive Team honoree would help the Buckeyes stifle opposing teams out of the half with a two-man trap on the inbound.

Her 1.9 steals per game ranked fourth in the conference and helped the Buckeyes force more than 21 turnovers per game, good for 10th nationally.

Sheldon adds a powerful two-way game to the Wings, who will now pair her with Arike Ogunbowale and Crystal Dangerfield in the backcourt.

The first chance to catch the now-former Buckeye in action will be May 15, when the Wings take on the Sky at 8 p.m.
