Preview: Ohio State and Virginia Tech Square Off in the NCAA Women’s Elite Eight

The Buckeyes and Hokies meet for only the second time in their histories on Monday at Climate Pledge Arena in the NCAA Women’s Tournament Elite Eight.

If Ohio State Buckeyes are hoping to punch their ticket to the Final Four in Dallas, Texas, it must first defeat a team it has only seen once before: Virginia Tech.

The Buckeyes and the Hokies meet Monday at 9 p.m. for an NCAA Women’s Tournament Elite Eight game at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington.

Ohio State defeated UConn 73-61 in their last game to qualify for the Elite Eight, their first win over the Huskies in program history.

Virginia Tech also scored 73 points their last time out, which saw them prevail against Tennessee, a tournament blue blood.

Ohio State freshman forward Cotie McMahon is averaging 18.3 points per game in the NCAA Tournament, with her highest signal-game total of 23 points coming on Saturday against UConn.

Virginia Tech is the No. 1-seeded team in this year’s NCAA Women’s Tournament. The Hokies opened their run in the bracket against Chattanooga and South Dakota before the aforementioned game with the Volunteers.

Four Virginia Tech players are averaging points in the double digits this season: senior center Elizabeth Kitley (18), junior guard Georgia Amoore (16.1), graduate forward Taylor Soule (11.1) and senior guard Kayana Traylor (10.9).

As mentioned above, Monday’s game is only the second in history between Ohio State and Virginia Tech.

The last and only other time the Buckeyes and Hokies shared the court was at the West Palm Beach Invitational in on December 21, 2018. The tournament was hosted at Massimino Court on the campus of Keizer University.

Virginia Tech got the better of Ohio State 81-73 when all was said and done.

The final game of the NCAA Women’s Tournament Elite Eight between Ohio State and Virginia Tech tips off at 9 p.m. eastern time.

The contest will be televised on ESPN, and available over the radio on Westwood One’s national network and locally in Columbus on 97.1 The Fan.
