Urban Meyer Tells Buckeyes Fans They 'Shouldn't Be' Worried About QB Situation

Former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer has a message for fans worried about the Kyle McCord-Devin Brown competition outcome.

The more time that passes that Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day does not name a starting quarterback, the more social media spirals.

The calls for Devin Brown have been louder now than ever before, as Day said if "all things are equal," at least the first snap should be taken by the guy with more experience, which is obviously Kyle McCord. Day has also said if no quarterback takes the reins from the other, then both quarterbacks could play against the Indiana Hoosiers, something some fans were not pleased to hear.

However, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said "the last thing they need to worry about" is who will be playing quarterback for the Buckeyes.

“No, they shouldn’t be,” Meyer said on "Urban's Take With Tim May" Tuesday. “Ryan Day, Corey Dennis, what they’ve done the last four years in quarterback recruiting, development and play, I don’t know if it’s ever been done before. Certainly not at Ohio State. Certainly not in the Big Ten Conference.”

Meyer has had his own run-in with playing multiple quarterbacks, trotting out Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett during the 2015 season. Both were solid quarterbacks when on the field, but were constantly looking over their shoulder to see when the other was warming up which likely downgraded their productivity in comparison to the national championship run the year prior.

Ohio State lost to Michigan State, finishing 12-1 and winning the Fiesta Bowl, but the experiment under center did not work.

Meyer admitted, though, that that wasn't the only tight quarterback race he had to decide on.

“I will say this, that we had Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow, and I thought it was the right thing to do because Joe Burrow — he did not win that spot, and it was close," Meyer said. "He could have won. We announced the starter and Joe left."

In the 2023 Buckeyes predicament, the competition's loser could jump in the transfer portal, and understandably so. However, Ohio State is set up nicely at the position with Air Noland set to arrive next season and Tavien St. Clair in 2025.
