2 Things We Learned About the New Ohio State Football Defense

In this story:
The Ohio State Buckeyes have National Championship aspirations and have yet to complete training camp.
Training camp is what separates the starters from second- and third-stringers. For Matt Patricia, who will be running the defense for the Buckeyes again in 2026, he’ll have to make major decisions about what the team’s lineup could look like in the fall.
The team’s first game of the season will be against Ball State on Sept. 5th, followed by a matchup against the Texas Longhorns on Sept. 12th, which should prove to be an exciting game.
Before those two games take place, we have to discuss two things we’ve learned about the Buckeyes defense at camp.
Flexibility Is Key In The OSU Defense
While J Alford felt the defense did poorly in Saturday’s scrimmage, one word is key: “versatility”.
The Buckeyes will use the next-man-up philosophy in the defense. Middle Linebacker Payton Pierce will be a key player in the lineup, along with Christian Aliegro.
The team will be running two linebacker sets, and instead of keeping one player in one position during training camp
Despite their less-than-stellar performance on Saturday, Alford felt that with Pierce’s ability to lead the room, the team’s strength lies in its flexibility in manpower.
Cross-training has been a major factor in camp this season, and gives Patricia a skeleton key with his defensive core.
“"It's crazy versatile. You got guys that can drop in coverage. You got guys that can blitz the A-gap, blitz off the edge, hit somebody in the mouth when it's time to hit somebody in the mouth," Alford said. "And I feel like it's not like this person does that, this person does that. We all can do it." “Lyle Alenstein
Middle Linebacker Payton Pierce Is A Leader
Payton Pierce will be wearing a green dot this season as leader of the Buckeyes’ linebacker room. He’ll be the conduit of communication between the players and coaches this season.
Pierce described himself as “super grateful” that he’ll be the one taking the reins in the room.
“"When I came here, it was my goal to be a captain and be a leader of this team," Pierce said Thursday. "So every decision I make is kind of towards that, doing what's best for the team and trying to be the best leader I can every day." “Lyle Alenstein
Pierce has played 26 games for the Buckeyes in two seasons, with 23 solo tackles, 23 assists, and one National Championship to his name.
Conclusion: The 2026 Buckeyes Will Come Out Of Camp Ready To Compete
The 2026 Buckeyes look onto the horizon as September marches closer, and while Ball State may be a cakewalk, they have to prepare for the trials ahead.
After losing Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles, they look to be in good hands, as Aliegro and Pierce lead the way.
14 total games, the Buckeyes allowed 202.7 yards per game and 130 points. Can this new room find a way to beat those stats in 2026?
