Why It’s Getting Easy To Buy Into Ohio State’s Big Ten Title Hopes

In this story:
The Big Ten Network continued the annual tradition of appearing at training camp ahead of the season, which gets underway in September. The Ohio State Buckeyes were no exception.
The expectations in Columbus are immense. Some pundits are thinking national title or bust while others are letting the chips fall where they may.
Former Michigan Wolverines tight end-turned-analyst Jake Butt reported his observations from Columbus, as the optimism couldn't be higher for maximal success on both sides of the ball. Butt admitted that, despite the talent that departed for the NFL, Ohio State is too used to reloading and retooling its roster instead of a complete rebuild.
As is to be expected- @OhioStateFB @OhioStateOnBTN is loaded once again. They are a “recession proof” program and will never have a shortage of talent, as I saw today.

Defense is replacing elite talent… but also great leaders and extremely versatile football players in Downs,…
Defensively, Butt wrote in a two-part thread on 'X' that each Buckeye position group is particularly fascinating as he sent high praise toward defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.
What Differs Last Year's Ohio State Team As Opposed To This Season?
"Defense is replacing elite talent… but also great leaders and extremely versatile football players in [Caleb] Downs, [Sonny] Styles, [Arvell] Reese," Butt wrote. "Was curious to see how they’d look…. I’ll keep this short- they look really good. Top 5-10 defense. Matt Patricia was such a boost for this program, and the NFL background has proven to be a major value add, but why is that the case?"
Butt noted that Patricia's NFL ties simply don't get enough credit.
"In my opinion, it comes down to his mind. In the NFL.. every roster is loaded with talent. So how do teams win?" Butt wrote. "Play callers and coaching. The ability to scout your opponent, ID tendencies, find the weak points, map out who they are situationally… all of that is extremely important in the NFL- you don’t win without it."
Offensively, though, Butt envisions this year's team simply accelerating in unimaginable ways under Arthur Smith. Coming as no surprise, Butt said it'll come down to defenses stopping the one-two punch of quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
In a nutshell, it may be easier said than done.
"Jeremiah Smith is obviously the best player in CFB… but he’s now taking the field without a proven alpha WR2, like he had with [Carnell] Tate and [Emeka] Egbuka," Butt wrote. "Don’t mistake me, they’re loaded at WR still, but many of the guys are unproven, and I’m not ready to say it’s 1:1 picking up where Tate left off… at all."
Butt will get an up close look at the Buckeyes again in Week 1, as they'll face the Ball State Cardinals with him on color commentary duties.
Meanwhile, coach Ryan Day said he loves what he is seeing from his receiving corps in camp thus far.
"I'm excited to see where these guys go this season, this is another group of receivers I think you'll see on the field as freshmen."

"I'm excited to see where these guys go this season," Day said, particularly highlighting Chris Henry Jr. "This is another group of receivers I think you'll see on the field as freshmen."
In a few short weeks Ohio State fans are going to find out just how elite this team really is.
