Ohio State QB Devin Brown OUT For Spring Game

Buckeye Nation will not get their first open look at the quarterback at the Ohio State Buckeyes Spring Game Saturday.

Ohio State Buckeyes QB Devin Brown will be unavailable for Saturday's Spring Game, head coach Ryan Day announced Wednesday.

Day said "something happened" to Brown which forced him to have a procedure done on a finger on his throwing hand Wednesday, but "should have pretty much a full summer" of workouts. He said the other four quarterbacks — Kyle McCord, Tristan Gebbia, Mason Maggs and Chad Ray — will participate.

"The other four quarterbacks will play. Really important for Kyle and Tristan to get out there and compete," Day said. "I think there's been really good quarterback play this spring. There's been a lot of ups and downs along the way, and so we'll kind of see how Saturday goes and then take a look at the spring and go from there."

Brown took to Twitter after Wednesday's announcement.

"Minor speed bump. More determined than ever! Go Bucks!" Brown tweeted.

This comes as a blow for Brown, who is locked in a tight quarterback battle with Kyle McCord.

"I think at the end of the day, both of them do things a little bit different, you know, their skill sets," Day said earlier this spring. "But the guy who's the leader has a lot of different ways to do it and is competitively tough, he's gonna ultimately win the job."

Saturday was an opportunity for McCord and Brown to get head-to-head repetitions in Ohio Stadium for the first time as they are in the midst of a quarterback battle to succeed projected first-round draft pick C.J. Stroud.

McCord has thrown for 606 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, whereas Brown has not attempted a pass at the college level.

All that said, despite Brown not being able to play on Saturday, it is likely the competition extends through the summer, and into fall camp.
