Former Oklahoma QBs Baker Mayfield and Jalen Hurts Duel in Monday Night Battle

There was no shortage of Sooners during Monday Night Football, as each team boasted a former OU quarterback great.

In a battle of former Oklahoma quarterback legends, Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles took down Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 25-11 on Monday night.

Hurts racked up 277 passing yards and 28 rushing yards and added two total touchdowns. He was accurate on the evening, completing 23-of-37 total passes. Despite two uncharacteristic interceptions, Hurts led the Eagles to a big win.

Mayfield started slow but picked up a steady rhythm in the second half. The Eagles stalled the last nine minutes of the game, not allowing Mayfield a chance at any sort of comeback. The former Heisman Trophy winner totaled 146 yards on 15-of-25 passing, with one touchdown and one interception.

It's not every day that two quarterbacks from the same college square off in a highly anticipated NFL matchup, but the Sooners produced just that.

Coming into the contest, both Mayfield and Hurts had led their teams to an undefeated 2-0 record.

Hurts has continued his Super Bowl runner-up campaign with a high-level start to the season, including 363 passing yards, 72 rushing yards and four total touchdowns. Mayfield's Buccaneers have been one of the biggest stories of the young NFL season, as the signal caller has amassed 490 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers.

Hurts has become an MVP candidate in Philadelphia since wrapping up his lone season in Norman in 2019. With the Sooners, Hurts threw for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,298 and 20 more scores. He led Oklahoma to the 2019 College Football Playoffs.

Mayfield has undergone a career resurgence on his one-year contract in Tampa Bay so far after bouncing around from the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams. He spent three incredible years in Norman, with his best season coming in 2017. Mayfield totaled 4,627 yards, 43 touchdowns and six interceptions and secured OU's sixth Heisman Trophy. He may have finally found an NFL home with the Buccaneers.

Both teams have playoff aspirations. Hurts' Eagles stay undefeated with the win, and Philadelphia remains one of the Super Bowl favorites in the NFC. The Buccaneers certainly have no reason to hit the panic button yet, as there's plenty of football left to play.
