MOORE — Oklahoma landed a big piece of the 2024 recruiting class — and didn't have to go far to do it.

Mykel Patterson-McDonald, a 4-star defensive back from Westmoore (OK), verbally committed to Brent Venables and the Sooners on Monday night.

The Jaguars star announced his pledge at Westmoore High School, choosing the Sooners over Missouri, Houston and UNLV. Patterson-McDonald has visited OU's campus multiple times, including for the "Party at the Palace" event that took place over the weekend.

Additionally, Patterson-McDonald was on campus multiple times throughout the month of June. He's OU's 17th commitment of the 2024 class and the Sooners' eighth in the month of July.

The talented DB told AllSooners in June that he appreciates how personable the Sooners' coaching staff is, indicating that they care about recruits and players beyond the football field.

"They're always honest with me, always straightforward with me. They check up on me, see how I'm doing. See if I want to come by," Patterson-McDonald said. "I just love the coaches there, love the program."

Rated one of the top three players in Oklahoma, OU's newest commit joins Jeremiah Newcombe from Casteel (AZ) High School and Jayden Hardy from Lewisville (TX) High School in the Sooners' 2024 defensive back group. Patterson-McDonald is also an Oklahoma legacy, as his father, Larry McDonald, played football at OU during his college days.

Patterson-McDonald said one of his best attributes is his leadership, a trait that Venables surely values. In addition to his leadership, the skilled safety is able to fly downhill and deliver punishing hits in the run game, another facet of his game that the Oklahoma coaching staff has to love.

With Patterson-McDonald now on board in OU's 2024 recruiting class, the Sooners likely have a better chance at landing the hard-hitting safety's childhood friend, David Stone.

Regardless of the 5-star defensive tackle's decision, gaining a commitment from one of the top prospects in the state of Oklahoma is always a huge victory.

Patterson-McDonald and the Jaguars will take on fellow 2024 OU DB target Devon Jordan and the Union Redhawks in week one of the high school football season.
