Oklahoma OL Cayden Green Stuns OU, Enters Transfer Portal

The former top 100 recruit became a starter for Bill Bedenbaugh and the Sooners in his true freshman season and was being counted on as an anchor for the future.

Oklahoma reportedly lost a key contributor on Tuesday.

Cayden Green, a true freshman from Lee's Summit North (MO) who started five games for the Sooners at left guard, told On3 he intends to enter his name into the transfer portal.

Rated a 4-star recruit by 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN, Green was Bill Bedenbaugh’s highest-rated offensive line prospect at Oklahoma at the time of his commitment.

The talented offensive lineman was not seen at the portion of Oklahoma’s practice that was opened to the media on Tuesday afternoon.

Recruited as an offensive tackle, Green made an impact at guard after Savion Byrd exited OU’s non-conference game against Tulsa with an injury.

Troy Everett initially took over between left tackle Walter Rouse and center Andrew Raym, but Bedenbaugh turned to Green against Texas and the true freshman starred.

He became a fixture along the left side of the offensive line for the rest of the season.

According to Pro Football Focus, Green was 10th on the team with 568 offensive snaps and posted a PFF overall grade  of 53.0 with a pass blocking grade of 69.5. He played in 11 games this season and posted three games of 61 or better.

Green played just 84 total snaps in the Sooners' first five games (four appearances), but then found himself thrust into the lineup against Texas and 362-pound noseguard T'Vondre Sweat. The 6-foot-5, 316-pound Green's insertion into the lineup changed the momentum of a game the Sooners eventually won 34-30.

Green played 57 snaps against the Longhorns, then started five of the last six games. He played a season-high 89 snaps against UCF in his first career start and finished the season against TCU with 78 snaps. He was also named a captain for the BYU game.

In 293 pass blocking plays, Green allowed no sacks, one quarterback hit and 14 pressures, according to PFF. He posted five games with a pass blocking grade of 70 or better, including three of his last five.

Green has three years of eligibility remaining.
