OU Softball: Former Sooner Star Accepts Job on Oregon Coaching Staff

After serving a year as a member of Duke's coaching staff, Sydney Romero has accepted a position with the Oregon Ducks.

A former Sooner star is on the move.

Sydney Romero, a key piece to Oklahoma’s 2016 and 2017 national titles, has accepted a job as an assistant coach with Oregon.

In Eugene Romero will be reunited with longtime OU assistant Melyssa Lombardi who now heads up Oregon’s program.

“Sydney is a tremendous competitor and a determined leader," Lombardi said in a release. “As a player and a coach, she consistently performed and won at the highest levels and made those around her great.

"She is an exceptional teacher of the game and her passion to coach and play the sport is unmatched. We're excited to welcome her to Oregon and can't wait to see what she will do for this team."

After graduating in 2019, Romero helped the Sooners win the 2021 and 2022 titles as a graduate assistant.

Last year, Romero made the move as a member of Duke’s coaching staff.

The Blue Devils finished 48-12 last year, and hosted Stanford in Super Regional play, marking the first time ever Duke hosted a softball Super Regional.

"I am extremely excited to get this opportunity to work alongside Coach Lombardi and learn from her every day,” Romero said. “This staff is such a solid group and I am looking forward to working with the team. Oregon Softball has already made me feel right at home.”
