OSU Baseball: Cowboys Take Final Big 12 Bedlam Series

The Cowboys needed a big finish Sunday to secure a series win against the Sooners.

Oklahoma State’s weekend was filled with Bedlam action and ended with a Bedlam win.

OSU baseball hosted a three-game weekend series against Oklahoma at O’Brate Stadium. Winning the series 2-1, OSU improved to 21-11 overall and 7-5 in Big 12 play.

The series was the final Big 12 meeting between the teams, with nonconference matchups already scheduled for the next couple of seasons. Still, these games meant more than the typical baseball games in Stillwater.

Saturday’s game saw a record attendance of 8,320 for the Cowboys. The series win also moved the Cowboys to 36-14 in Bedlam matchups under Josh Holliday.

OSU began the weekend with a 9-6 victory on Friday night. OSU left fielder Nolan Schubart’s two-run home run in the first inning was the first score.

Despite finishing with only six hits, the Cowboys survived a late rally from the Sooners, who had two solo home runs in the ninth.

The Cowboys again scored nine runs in their series-clinching win on Sunday but finished with 11 hits this time. After OU first baseman Michael Snyder’s double drove in a run in the fifth inning, OU led 5-3.

That lead did not last much longer. The Cowboys’ barrage in the bottom of the seventh essentially sealed the win.

Avery Ortiz’s RBI single brought the Cowboys to within a run, bringing Donovan LaSalle to the plate. LaSalle crushed a three-run homer to give the Cowboys the lead. From there, a couple of walks with the bases loaded helped OSU pad its lead and secure a six-run seventh.

Before clinching the series on Sunday, the Cowboys fell 19-10 in an elongated Saturday afternoon matchup. With the game already in firm control of the Sooners after eight innings, a 95-minute rain delay simply delayed the inevitable.

Still, OSU came away with the series win and heads into Tuesday’s matchup at Wichita State riding high.
