Oklahoma State’s leading scorer is officially in the transfer portal.

OSU guard Javon Small entered the transfer portal on Monday after only one season in Stillwater, according to a report from Jamie Shaw of On3 Sports. Small had been reported to be in the portal since it first opened but initially denied those reports.

Small’s move comes a week after the Cowboys hired Steve Lutz as the team’s next coach. In his introductory press conference, former OSU guard John-Michael Wright asked Lutz about his willingness to be honest with players as they decide whether to return.

Lutz said he would do his best to share his vision of the program and where players could fit in. Although Small appears to be on the way out of Stillwater, he would have the potential to shine under Lutz.

Last season, Small led OSU in scoring with 15.1 points per game and shot 37.4% from 3-point range. Small was also a solid playmaker for OSU, averaging 4.1 assists to lead the team in that category. Some of Small’s best performances came toward the end of the season, including a career-high 34 points in the Cowboys’ regular-season finale at BYU.

Before coming to OSU, Small spent two seasons at East Carolina and became a high-impact player. Small averaged 15.8 points and 5.6 assists in his second season before entering the transfer portal.

Coming to OSU to play for former coach Mike Boynton, Small was one of the many high-level recruits Boynton had. But firing Boynton came with the risk of losing that talent.

Small joins most of last season’s starting lineup in the portal, with Brandon Garrison, Eric Dailey Jr. and Quion Williams already looking for their next destination.

Although it would be ideal for Lutz to bring back last season’s leading scorer, Small is sure to make a positive impact at his next stop.
