OSU Basketball: Drake Transfer Guard Lists Cowboys in Top Six

Steve Lutz's Cowboys are looking to make their first transfer addition.

Oklahoma State is in the running for another talented transfer guard.

Under recently hired coach Steve Lutz, the Cowboys have been in the mix for several players in the transfer portal as they look to build next season’s roster. Drake transfer Kevin Overton listed OSU in his top six, as Joe Tipton of On3 Sports reported.

OSU will be in a battle for Overton with plenty of familiar rivals. OSU will have to outdo Houston, Texas Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Colorado State.

As a freshman, Overton shined with the Bulldogs and helped them to the NCAA Tournament. Although they lost as a 10-seed to Washington State, the Bulldogs made an impressive run to win the Missouri Valley Conference.

Overton averaged 11.3 points and started all 35 games to make the MVC All-Freshman Team. Showing his potential as an outside threat, Overton shot 34.6% from beyond the arc on 5.1 attempts per game. Along with 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists, Overton has room to grow.

Overton’s best performance in his freshman season came against Murray State in February. He scored 23 points, shooting 5-of-8 from 3-point range, and had two steals. That was one of three 20-point games for Overton last season.

Before going to Drake, Overton played at Sunrise Christian in Wichita, where he was a three-star recruit. Although he finished his high school career in Kansas, Overton is from Oklahoma.

Before going to Sunrise Christian, Overton played at Midwest City and Norman North.

Although the Cowboys are in the running and Overton is from Oklahoma, it could be uphill to beat West Virginia. This offseason, the Mountaineers hired Darian DeVries, who coached Overton at Drake last season.

Still, OSU has an opportunity to bring Overton back to his home state and give Lutz’s team a solid addition.
