Oklahoma State could soon have its first transfer portal commitment.

Wyoming transfer Brendan Wenzel has OSU in his top six, according to a report from The Athletic’s Tobias Bass. Wenzel is the latest transfer to have interest from Steve Lutz since he arrived at OSU earlier this month.

The Cowboys are competing for Wenzel against Big 12 rivals TCU and Texas Tech, along with Creighton, SMU and Mississippi State.

The Cowboys hired Lutz after firing Mike Boynton, who had coached the team for the past seven seasons. Lutz’s fast-paced offense makes OSU an intriguing spot.

Wenzel spent the past three seasons at Wyoming and started 66 of his 89 games there. If Wenzel came to Stillwater, he could be in for a dramatic change in styles.

Under Jeff Linder at Wyoming, the Cowboys ranked 234th in pace, while Lutz’s Western Kentucky team was the fastest in college basketball. In his senior season, Wenzel was fourth on the team in scoring at 11.6 points per game and started all 31 games he played.

Wenzel is also not a typical guard. At 6-foot-7, he finished third on the team in rebounds per game at 5.1. At 37.7% from 3-point range last season, Wenzel would have been second on OSU in that category, behind only Jarius Hicklen.

As a junior, Wenzel shot a career-best 40.6% from beyond the arc and emerged as a regular starter. Before that, he helped Wyoming to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022 and started the team’s First Four loss to Indiana.

Wenzel spent his first two years at Utah, redshirting in 2019-20 and playing only two games in 2020-21. His move to Wyoming gave him more opportunity and now the chance to play a significant role for a power conference team.

With Javon Small, John-Michael Wright and Quion Williams on their way out of Gallagher-Iba, Wenzel could give Lutz and the Cowboys exactly what they are looking for next season.
