Oklahoma State’s coaching search might finally be over.

OSU has offered Western Kentucky coach Steve Lutz its head coaching job, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports. Rothstein tweeted that the two sides are working out an agreement, and no deal is done yet.

Still, this is the furthest any discussion has gone in the nearly three weeks since Mike Boynton’s firing. The Cowboys parted ways with Boynton after a 12-20 season that ended with a blowout loss in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament.

Lutz could be a game-changer for OSU if athletic director Chad Weiberg can finish the deal. In his three seasons as a head coach, Lutz has brought immense success to multiple programs.

At Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Lutz helped the team win 18 more games in his first season and make only the second NCAA Tournament appearance in team history. He led the Islanders back to the NCAA Tournament in his second season, leading to another opportunity at Western Kentucky.

With the Hilltoppers, Lutz won another conference tournament and made his third straight NCAA Tournament as a head coach. Although he was unable to advance to the second round, making the tournament has been an immense milestone at each school.

For reference, OSU’s past three NCAA Tournament appearances have come with three different coaches. There is no guarantee Lutz will stay at OSU long-term if he can bring immediate success to Stillwater. However, the prospect of a coach who can offer sustained success to a program like OSU is too intriguing to pass up.

Per multiple sources, the deal is expected to be finalized on Monday.
