Cowboys Have More Holes to Fill After Quion Williams Enters Transfer Portal

The former Cowboy did a little bit of everything, which could make him difficult to replace.

After a disappointing season, Oklahoma State’s roster has continued to take a hit.

OSU guard Quion Williams entered the transfer portal on Monday. Williams has spent the past two seasons in Stillwater and has been one of the program’s most consistent players.

Last season, Williams started 28 of 32 games for the Cowboys. As a key part of the starting lineup, he averaged 28.2 minutes per game.

Williams took advantage of his minutes, averaging 7.5 points and 1.1 steals. As a solid all-around player, he excelled in his role as a glue guy for the Cowboys.

His role would have, and still could, make him the perfect fit under new coach Steve Lutz and his fast-paced style. The Cowboys’ guard could provide energy and would be great to help Lutz transition to Stillwater.

Although he is not necessarily a leading scorer or someone who could carry the team, he has been a valuable contributor, having played many minutes in two seasons. However, those qualities are also what will make him a sought-after player in the portal.

While Williams has done pretty much everything for OSU, he was especially valuable on the glass. The sophomore led the team in rebounding with 5.5 per game, including 1.9 offensive rebounds, while finishing the season with four double-doubles.

One of his best outings this season came in OSU’s matchup against Oklahoma. In the overtime loss, Williams posted a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds.

One game earlier, In a win against Cincinnati, Williams flirted with a triple-double. He finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists.

Before becoming a typical starter for Mike Boynton, Williams burst onto the scene as a freshman. In the 2022-23 season, Williams played in 34 games, averaging 3.2 points and 2.5 rebounds in 13 minutes.

Before coming to OSU, Williams was the 5A state MVP in Arkansas and led Jonesboro High to a state championship. Including offers from Arkansas and Houston out of high school, he will receive no shortage of attention over the next few weeks.

The Cowboys will miss Williams' production and energy next season under a new coach. Considering Williams’ style of play, his game will translate anywhere he goes, and he should be a meaningful contributor at his next stop. However, if Williams decides to return to Stillwater, he could thrive in Lutz’s system.
