One Oklahoma State Golfer Makes Cut After U.S. Amateur Stroke Play

The hope that the Oklahoma State Cowboys would have multiple players in match play ended with them falling short on Tuesday.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys men’s golf team had seven players in stroke play at the U.S. Amateur. But only one will move on to match play.

Gaven Lane was the lucky one, as he shot a two-round total of 141 to finish in a tie for 33rd place, which landed him one of the 64 spots in match play at the U.S. Amateur at Merion Golf Club on Tuesday.

The stroke play field included 312 players, so each played a round at Merion and another at Philadelphia Country Club. Lane played at Merion on Tuesday, where he shot a 72. He fired a 69 at Philadelphia Country Club on Monday.

There was little room for error to make the cut. The low score in stroke play was Joshua Ryan, who shot a two-round total of 8-under 132. Twenty-two players finished under-par in stroke play, and the cut line was 2-over. Lane finished at 1-over.

On Wednesday morning there was a 16-player playoff for 11 spots in match play. Lane was not among them, but the playoff may influence who he faces in the first round.

Match play begins on Wednesday with pairings to be announced. Lane finished in 17th place at the 2026 Southern Amateur earlier this summer. He will have a cheering section made up of six teammates who were unable to punch a ticket to Wednesday’s first round of match play.

The remaining six players will have to watch from afar as Lane contends for his first U.S. Amateur crown. That includes Preston Stout, who has played several times on the PGA Tour this year and is the reigning NCAA individual champion, a title that paved his way to the Amateur.

Stout ended up in a tie for 144th place with a two-round total of 146, with rounds of 75 and 71.

Eric Lee, who reached the semifinals of last year’s U.S. Amateur, missed the cut with a two-round total of 144. His 73 and 71 left in him a tie for 93rd place.

Ethan Fang, who won the Amateur Championship in Great Britain last year, finished in a tie for 117th with rounds of 74 and 71 for a two-day total of 145.

Collin Bond, a sophomore at OSU, finished in a tie for 282nd place after he shot rounds of 79 and 77 for a two-round total of 156.

Henry Guan and Jaxon Bandelier, who redshirted last year, missed the cut. Guan shot a two-round total of 149 with scores of 76 and 73, which left him in a tie for 197th place. Bandelier shot a 79 in both rounds to finish at 158 and in a tie for 294th.
