Former Rebels SS Grae Kessinger Called Up to Houston Astros

The former Rebel has been called up to The Show.

Former Ole Miss Rebels shortstop Grae Kessinger has reportedly been called up to the big leagues, joining the Houston Astros this week on the diamond.

Kessinger has spent time with the Astros Triple-A affiliate Sugar Land Space Cowboys this season, and Mark Berman with Fox 26 (KRIV) in Houston reported the news on Sunday. He also provided a quote from Kessinger on the milestone in his career.

“This is awesome and exciting," Kessinger said. "A lot of work and a lot of support from my family. All the sacrifices growing up makes it all worthwhile. A dream come true.”

The infielder played three seasons with Ole Miss spanning from 2017 to 2019, and as an Oxford, Miss., native, he elected to spend his collegiate career at home. At the plate, Kessinger's career at Ole Miss got off to a slow start with a .175 batting average, but his final two seasons with the Rebels saw him post over a .300 average in both campaigns, driving home 50 RBI in 2019.

He was selected by the Astros in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft with the No. 68 overall pick. He joined the franchise's Double-A affiliate for the 2021 and 2022 seasons, and he moved up to Triple-A this year prior to receiving the call to The Show.
