Kenjon Barner Gets Candid on What Makes Dan Lanning Different

The Oregon Ducks enter the 2026 season with perhaps more pressure than they’ve ever had before. Between media outlets listing the Ducks high in early preseason rankings and predictions to make or win their first National Championship, the expectations for this Oregon team are sky high.

But former Ducks running back Kenjon Barner spoke about what he thinks separates Oregon amid outside noise – and it starts with the man at the top.

Kenjon Barner Breaks Down Dan Lanning’s Leadership

Barner appeared on Big Ten Network on BIG Today to talk about the Ducks’ fall camp storylines. When reporter Camryn Irwin asked him why expectations continue to rise in coach Dan Lanning’s fifth year, Barner didn’t mince his words.

“The expectations come once you consistently begin to win at a high clip – that’s what the fanbase expects, that’s what the country expects,” Barner said. “… When you have a coach who’s consistently keeping you grounded – not allowing you to get too high, not allowing you to get too low, not allowing you to read your own press clippings.”

“His ability to continually manipulate the mind of these young men – and not manipulate in a negative way – but get them through a mind state where they’re ready to run through a brick wall for him,” he continued. “There’s not a scenario or a situation that this team hasn’t gone through that coach Lanning doesn’t put them through. So, when you have a man like that, the sky’s the limit for this program.”

When Lanning entered in 2022, it was his first time in a head coaching role after previously serving as the defensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs. Each season, he’s shown growth as a young coach by taking the program further and further each season. After reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals a season ago, the next step for Lanning and the Ducks is making it to the title game.

Why Kenjon Barner’s Praise Matters

Barner played for Oregon from 2009 to 2012, finishing with one of the most illustrious careers by a Ducks running back. He famously rushed for five touchdowns vs. the USC Trojans in 2012 and notched 1,767 rushing yards that season.

The running back notably played under Chip Kelly, who coached the program to three straight Pac-10/Pac-12 Championships while Barner was with the program. Barner has seemingly maintained a close relationship with the Oregon program, with current running back Dierre Hill Jr. calling him “an amazing mentor” during his true freshman season.

So not only does Barner understand the history of the Ducks program and have knowledge of the current culture, but he also saw firsthand what it’s like to play under a coach who led Oregon to on-field success.

Actions, not words or preseason predictions, will lead the Ducks to what they accomplish on the field. If the team is able to block out the outside noise and stay grounded like Barner says Lanning is setting them up to do, that should prepare them for the long season ahead.

To Barner’s other point, Lanning appears to have spent the past few years – not just this season – prepping the team for any situation. Special teams coordinator Joe Lorig said on Monday that Lanning and the staff have been mindful about development and preparing the next man-up.

For example, Lorig said last season, the team would replicate high-pressure opportunities for placekicker Gage Hurych in practice, despite him being the backup, knowing the potential for a starting role in the future. With great attention to detail and development, Lanning and company seem to have prepared the team’s depth, not just starters, for the road ahead.
