Pitt vs Florida State Live Feed: Panthers Escape Tallahassee Victorious

In this story:
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers have traveled down south to Tallahassee, Florida, making their longest trip to exact some revenge from Florida State. The last time we saw the Seminoles, they handed Pitt its worst loss of the season - a 71-64 defeat at the Petersen Events Center back in January.
The Panthers will try to return the favor today against a Florida State team that is getting gradually more whole and recovering from the injuries that plagued them through earlier portions of the season.

Stephen: Final: Pitt 8, Florida State 7.
It was much closer than it needed to be, but the Panthers nonetheless emerged with a hard-earned win over Florida State. They exacted revenge for their January loss to the Seminoles with some timely buckets.
Pitt capitalized on Seminole mistakes routinely. They scored eight points off Florida State’s 11 turnovers and won the battle for second chance points 20-6. Game balls should go to Federiko Federiko - eight points, 13 rebounds and three blocks - and Nike Sibande, who’s 12 second half points were crucial to helping the Panthers create some breathing room and secure the victory. Pitt scored 15 of the game's final 25 points to leave with a convincing win.
Stephen: Nike Sibande has started to take over. He's hit a pair of triples and scored a layup to fuel the Panther offense and keep them out in front at 68-63 with 4:57 to play in this game.
Stephen: An Elliot triple gave the Panthers some breathing room but they lead by just four at 58-54 with 7:36 to go. Pitt could be up more, though - its made just six of 14 layups this afternoon.
Stephen: Florida State took a brief one-point lead after going on a 7-2 burst, but Burton has willed Pitt back into the lead with a couple of jumpers. Guillermo Diaz-Graham has done a nice job with Federiko on the bench with three fouls. He's scored a couple of buckets from the block to keep the run from getting out of hand. The Panthers lead 53-50 with 11:13 to play.
Stephen: Pitt is in dangerous territory right now, up 45-43 but still playing some sloppy basketball that threatens to give away the lead. Federiko - who's been one of the best players on the floor this afternoon - has picked up his third foul quickly in the second half.
Stephen:
#Pitt's bench today (Sibande, Santos and the Diazs Graham): 0 points, 0-2 from the field, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 fouls and 3 turnovers in 17 combined minutes.

Seems like the starters will have to carry the load down the stretch.
Stephen: Halftime: Pitt 37, Florida State 33.
The Panthers started hot from deep but their reliance on the 3-point shot has come back to bite them. They've missed nine of their last ten attempts from distance to close the half, which allowed the Seminoles to chip away at what was an eight-point deficit. Pitt also made sloppy mistakes that gave away opportunities to build a larger lead.
Credit to Federiko - I think he's been the Panthers' best player this afternoon. He is up to four points, six rebounds, two blocks and a steal through 17 first half minutes. Blake Hinson leads the team with 14 points.
Stephen: Jalen Warley has been a menace in this first half. He's the game's leading scorer with 14 points as the first half clock winds inside three minutes. Warley's scored nine straight points to pull the Seminoles within two at 33-31.
Stephen: Florida State is hanging around at 23-18 with 7:40 to go in the first half. Pitt is still playing well offensively but they've committed some unforced errors that allowed the Seminoles to stay within spitting distance. The Pitt bench - mainly Nike Sibande - is off to a rough start.
Stephen: The Panthers have opened up an 18-12 lead at the second media timeout of the game on the strength of a 4-8 start shooting 3-pointers. This all comes while Burton hasn't scored yet - he has three assists but is 0-4 from the field.
Stephen: Pitt is off to a fast start offensively. They're averaging 1.429 points per possession and have hit a couple of triples off nice skip passes from Burton. Panthers have made four of their first eight shots, while Florida State has missed five of their first seven attempts.
Stephen: For the 15th game in a row, Pitt will run with the same starting lineup: Nelly Cummings, Greg Elliot, Jamarius Burton, Blake Hinson and Federiko Federiko. Matthew Cleveland, Darin Green Jr., Caleb Mills, Jalen Warley and Cameron Corhen will start for the Seminoles.
Stephen:
#Pitt’s ACC wins right now: 10
— stephen thompson (@stephenethom) February 11, 2023
Most ACC wins in program history: 11
Program record for conference wins: 15
Games left to play this year: 7
Stephen: Pitt's main focus this afternoon has to be taking some individual pride on defense. Everything else will fall into place if they can win their one-on-one matchups on defense and keep the ball in front of them. Jeff Capel said it very specifically this week - the Panthers did not do a good enough job of defending individually in the last matchup with Florida State and it cost them their worst loss of the season.
