Pitt Declines Invitation to NIT

The Pitt Panthers will not play more postseason basketball this season.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers will not participate in anymore postseason basketball this season, the program announced after being left out of the NCAA Tournament.

The Panthers have declined an invite to the 2024 National Invitational Tournament, they announced in a release moments after the NCAA Tournament brackets were revealed. Their 2023-24 season is over.

“I am incredibly proud of the performance, development, and fight of our team,” head coach Jeff Capel said in a prepared statement. “We ultimately fell short of our goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament, despite ranking favorably in the computers, performing well in conference play with a fourth-place finish and an ACC Tournament Semifinal appearance, and playing our best basketball over the last eight weeks of the season. We made the decision to decline an NIT invitation as a team and with the support of our University leadership. It was a difficult choice, but ultimately what is best for our student-athletes.”

Pitt finished their season 22-11 overall and 12-8 in ACC play. It concluded its season with a 72-65 loss to North Carolina in the ACC Tournament semifinals. They were named one of the first four teams to be left out of the NCAA Tournament, the selection committee revealed.
