Pitt PG Nelly Cummings Plays Through Pain in Win Over Florida State

The Pitt Panthers' starting point guard played through pain against Florida State.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers' starting point guard did not play his best game down in Tallahassee, Florida against the Florida State Seminoles. Even though his team won, Cummings made just one of his six attempts from the field, grabbed one rebound and dished out just three assists while committing two turnovers.

But there was a reason why Cummings was not at his best when Pitt traveled to face the Seminoles. Head coach Jeff Capel said following the game that Cummings came into the game hurt and was dealing with pain all afternoon, but did not specify what was ailing him. It didn't help that Cummings took a spill in the first half and came up with a slight limp favoring his right ankle.

Capel added that Cummings was fine after suffering that fall, but because it was simply not his day, he opted to sit his starting point guard for the majority of the second half. Cummings played just 22 minutes against Florida State - tied for a season-low - and did not play for the final 12:29 of the game.

In his absence, Nike Sibande was a vital contributor, scoring all 12 of his points in the final 7:24 of the second half. He was crucial to helping maintain and expand upon their slim lead.
