New Transfer G Target for Pitt to Pursue

A 6'7 guard with Power 5 experience is exactly what the doctor ordered for the Pitt Panthers.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers have one more roster spot and scholarship to fill with the offseason rapidly approaching its close. Most of the team's offseason needs have been filled but with there is one archetype of player they could use to help fill the void left by the graduation of Jamarius Burton, Nike Sibande, Nelly Cummings and Greg Elliot.

A veteran guard is the biggest remaining need for the Panthers and a new target that fits the bill has just entered the transfer portal. Rutgers' Paul Mulcahy - a 6'7 guard who's contributed valuable minutes over his four years with the Scarlet Knights - opted to transfer this week and should be someone Pitt is interested in.

Mulcahy's baseline stats are good enough to garner a look - 8.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists to just per game 1.8 turnovers per game. He's played in 121 career games, 81 of which were starts, and has played in three NCAA Tournament games over two years. He's also a 35.7% 3-point shooter for his career, which doesn't hurt.

The advanced stats also paint a picture of a player that even further fits what the Panthers need. Mulcahy's posted an assist rate north of 28% for each of the past two seasons - an elite mark among Division I players. Not only is he a plus defender (career-high 3.2 defensive box plus-minus and 2.9% steal rate last season) he is remarkably efficient offensively (103.1 offensive rating on just 17.7 usage rate).

Everything points to Mulcahy being an ideal pickup for Pitt, because he likely would not take up starter minutes but is more than capable of giving a deep team an immediate jolt every time he steps on the floor. That said, expect Jeff Capel and company to face some stiff competition to land one of the best players currently available in the transfer portal.
