Pitt Shuts Down Jorge Diaz Graham for Season
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers' depth took a hit as they hit the home stretch of the regular season while riding a hot streak.
Pitt announced this week that sophomore forward Jorge Diaz Graham, who had been sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury two weeks ago, had undergone surgery and would be out for the remainder of the season.
“Jorge is a big part of our program and plays with infectious energy and enthusiasm,” head coach Jeff Capel said. “The ankle was really limiting his mobility and holding him back from playing to his capabilities. Our medical team has done a great job identifying and correcting the issue and will be integral in helping him through the recovery process. Having the surgery now helps provide Jorge with additional recovery time as he works his way back onto the court for the 2024-25 season.”
Diaz Graham sat out Pitt's contests against Duke and Georgia Tech before news of his injury broke. It's unclear whether he was on the bench for health or performance reasons. He averaged 3.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.8 assists on 36.4% shooting from the field in 10.4 minutes per game this season.
With the Panthers' frontcourt depth already in a fragile state and the loss of Diaz Graham makes them thinner, even if he only played sparingly. Federiko Federiko and Guillermo Diaz Graham will likely see extended minutes as a result while Jeff Capel may be forced to lean more heavily on the likes of Will Jeffress and Zack Austin as well.
