Pitt Appears to Have Picked Their Starting QB
PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers are evaluating their quarterback options for a second year in a row, and this year, it appears another transfer is going to take the reigns as the starter.
Phil Jurkovec had to hold some ground on the other quarterbacks when he chose to return to his hometown of Pittsburgh and transfer to Pitt from Boston College. Still, the competition with Penn State transfer Chrisitan Veilleux and Nate Yarnell was something head coach Pat Narduzi wasn't going to overstep.
But, four weeks into spring football, it appears Jurkovec has earned the starting job - for now.
During his post-practice press conference, Narduzzi made a telling statement about the competition behind his starter.
"Right now, Christian [Veilleux] and my man Nate [Yarnell] are in a battle," he said. "Ty [Dieffenbach]has done some really nice things. They’re in a battle for that No. 2 spot. We’ll keep evaluating, and it will be something that goes into the summer."
Narduzzi has seen plenty of good from his quarterbacks, including the now-starter Jurkovec.
"Phil has been outstanding, like we thought," Narduzzi said. "He got maybe 25 snaps last two scrimmages. We’ve seen a lot of good things in practice. Just going to keep him safe and find out what we got."
And with one and a half weeks of practice left before the Spring Game, Pitt appears to have their starting quarterback in place.
