Since Spring practice started in early March for South Carolina, there have been a few prevalent messages voiced by head coach Shane Beamer regarding his football team heading into his third season in Columbia. One message, however, has stuck out amongst most of them: many freshmen will play, and some must be ready to play by week one.

In some instances, this message can be interpreted as a concerning one because, for most programs, if true freshmen have to play, it means you don't have enough talent or experience at a certain position to prevent yourself from throwing your youngest players into the proverbial fire. For the Gamecocks' 2023 squad, however, many of these freshmen will be playing significant snaps simply because they're too talented to keep off the field. Shane Beamer was asked if there was a distinct difference between the January and Summer enrollees during South Carolina's first Fall camp scrimmage yesterday, and his answer was a touch surprising, but in a good way if you're a Gamecock fan.

"Probably not as much as you might think," Beamer said. "This is a talented freshmen class we got, [it] really is. You look across the board: o-line, d-line, receiver, defensive back, quarterback, [and] running back. There's some really talented freshmen, and they don't look like they just got here, so when is say that you can't really tell a difference to me, that's more of a compliment to the freshmen that did just get here and the whole freshmen class in general."

Of course, the Summer enrollees have still had to endure a learning curve regarding their new life as college football players and the strenuous schedule they must manage both in and out of the operations building. Still, the Gamecocks' head man doesn't believe the adjustment gap is significant.

"Certainly, their heads are spinning, and how we do things every day is a challenge, just being in the building on time, getting your rest, all that stuff. They're not as far along as those guys that were here in January, but they're not far off, and we're really impressed with them."
