Shane Beamer Explains Thought Process Behind Celebrating Wins

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer explained his rationale behind celebrating wins, comfortable or ugly, on Tuesday afternoon.

After defeating the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 38-28 this past Saturday, South Carolina's head football coach Shane Beamer made it known in his post-game press conference that the team, who had secured victory since September 23rd against Mississippi State, was going to celebrate 'the heck' out of their win over the Gamecocks of Jacksonville, AL. The remarks drew polarizing responses from Gamecock fans, with some getting completely behind the third-year coach's remarks, while others criticized him as not being critical enough of his team's 'ugly win.'

Beamer explained his reasoning behind his statements on Tuesday, saying that while he understood being critical of a performance, he never wants to see anyone be miserable or unhappy about a win.

"We have the greatest fans in America, and if they walked out of that stadium on Saturday, critical of me, that's ok. I deserved it, disappointed in how we played and didn't look great. Absolutely. They're exactly right, but I would hope that if you're a Gamecock fan, that you didn't walk out of that stadium miserable and unhappy because we won the football game," Beamer stated. "We came in here on Sunday as a team, and we were very clear about that, me to the coaches and players, that it was unacceptable, and that if we play like we did last Saturday, we will not win this week, and we will not win next week, and we will not win the week after. We need to be better. And that was very evident to me, and that starts with me as the head coach. But I would hope that nobody walked out of that stadium just unhappy," Beamer explained. "I've been a part of teams where the head coach walked in the locker room after a win and absolutely blistered that team, and they didn't win a game the rest of the year. I said that I will never do that as a head coach. Are we going to hold them accountable? Did I tell them in the locker room Saturday that we need to be a whole lot better, and that we were nowhere near our best, and that we got a lot to clean up? Yes, but we're also going to celebrate and never walk out of a locker room feeling like we lost the football game."
