A few days ago, Shane Beamer was asked about what his thoughts were regarding the state of his program halfway through the 2023 season and used it as a chance to temper expectations for this Fall, remind people of the positives from the previous two seasons, and what recruits are coming in just a few short months. What happened on Saturday night in the Gamecocks gut-wrenching 41-39 loss to the Florida Gators lends some reason as to why Beamer delivered that message.

For the first time in the Shane Beamer era, the Gamecocks blew a two-score lead in the fourth quarter and have started the season 2-4, and the schedule won't get any easier throughout the rest of the Fall. This was a chance for South Carolina to get revenge on a team that embarrassed them in 2022, one that was 1-7 in games away from Gainesville in the Billy Napier era. To top it all off, the Gamecocks had a whole extra week to get ready for this game—none of those external factors paid off on Saturday.

So now the question some fans will ask is where do the Gamecocks go from here? To answer that question, we first have to answer this pair of questions: what are the most significant issues currently for South Carolina, and most importantly, are they fixable? Offensively, Dowell Loggains seemed to find something with the personnel changes made along the offensive line, as Carolina has put together three straight games of 100 or more rushing yards for the first time since week four through six in the 2022 season.

Defensively, there are some serious problems that don't seem solvable in the short term. The Gamecocks continue to struggle to generate a consistent pass rush, second-level defenders seem to be getting lost when trying to diagnose what's happening, and the secondary isn't making enough plays when needed. When this happens in one game, it's entirely fair for people to point to execution as the main issue, but when it becomes repetitive, people begin to wonder if there are more deeply-rooted problems that need to be addressed.

Shane Beamer has done a lot of good for this program since he took the job in December 2020, and that can't be disputed. It also can no longer be denied that some troubling trends are holding this team back from reaching its full potential. Beamer has some tough decisions to make over the next three months, and those decisions could very well shape the future of his tenure at South Carolina.
