The South Carolina Gamecocks have been recruiting lights out at the edge position over the past cycle and a half. In the 2023 cycle, Sterling Lucas landed edge rusher Desmond Umeozulu and helped Shane Beamer, and Co. land converted edge rusher to wide receiver Nyckoles Harbor. Almost one week ago today, Lucas landed five-star edge Dylan Stewart, giving the Gamecocks potentially two future menaces on the edge in Stewart and Umeozulu.

However, as every major college football staff knows, there are certain positions where you can never have too many good players, and the edge position is one of them. Thus, South Carolina has thrown their proverbial hat in the ring for several edge rushers in the 2025 class, guys like Sharlandiin Strange, Isaiah Gibson, Taeshawn Alston, and Zahir Mathis.

Mathis, in particular, is the most nationally recognizable amongst the group and has heard from some of the country's best programs, whether they're Eastside or Westside. Zahir, however, is ready to take the next step in his recruitment and cut his list down to twelve teams on Monday evening, including the Gamecocks in this group.

Among Mathis' Top 12 are seven SEC and four Big Ten schools. The team that seems to have the most traction right now is the home-state Penn State Nittany Lions, who have hosted Zahir for at least two visits, so the Gamecocks will need to get the Pennsylvania native back on campus if they want to remain in the race long-term.
