Shane Beamer Provides Updates on Quarterback Room, Defensive Fronts, Ahead of Saturdays Scrimmage

Shane Beamer spoke with the media yesterday following practice number six, where the team worked on situational work, third-down work, and some goal-line situations after Easter weekend. There weren't many other injuries to add, but he said they were thin again at running back. Jawarn Howell and Oscar Adaway are healthy and getting the bulk of the reps right now. South Carolina will also have their first scrimmage this Saturday morning.

Coach Beamer also gave some clarity on separation in the quarterback room and what he expects from them during the scrimmage:

"I wouldn't say separation, those guys are continuing to battle, obviously when you talk about going in the stadium and guys being able to separate themselves, that's a position they'll all get a lot of reps on Saturday, and they will get an opportunity to show how they handle operating the offense with the coaches not out there telling them everything and coaching every single rep. There will be some separation on Saturday i would imagine, based on how were going to set it up and you'd hope there is but there is great competition going in there."

The coaching staff is still trying to "figure it out" in the wide receiver room. With it still being early on in spring practice, Beamer doesn't necessarily have a top four or top six in terms of a lineup and is still waiting to see that room grow. The added depth at the defensive end position as well was a topic of discussion. It allows them to be more disruptive and play more guys.

Coach Beamer was also asked to speak on how the structure looks with the defense going back and forth between a four-down front or three-down fronts, and some practices they'd practice a specific front each day and each period and what exactly they were installing that day. He stated they want to be able to do both at a high level and be multiple.
