What Holmon Wiggins Said About Marcel Reed's Offseason Development

The Texas A&M Aggies will be looking to keep building on the momentum the program saw after the second season under head coach Mike Elko. The Aggies head into the 2026 season poised to take the next step under Elko and secure their spot as one of the teams to beat in the SEC.

Those expectations obviously fall on the leader of the Texas A&M offense and the current face of the program in quarterback Marcel Reed. While the Aggies obviously have plenty of talent surrounding Reed, a lot of the pressure will rest on the shoulders of the second-year starting quarterback.

And as Reed steps into his second season as the Aggies' starting quarterback, his offensive coordinator is taking note of his progression over the offseason.

Marcel Reed Keeps Taking the Steps to Get Better

2026 will be the second seaosn where Reed takes the field as Texas A&M's starting quarterback; however, the signal caller will have another voice inside his helmet following a change at offensive coordinator.

Offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins takes the job after spending the 2025 season as the Aggies' wide receivers coach and following the departure of former assistant Collin Klein. And over the offseason and now into Fall Camp, Wiggins is liking what he is seeing out of his starting quarterback, highlighting what Reed has been doing to improve.

"I think for him, he has stayed steady," Wiggins said. "The biggest thing for us was making those consistent improvements and daily deposits that he can make. So he's up there studying and getting extra film; he's up there trying to understand exactly what we're asking him to do in the game plan and what's in the system."

Reed was plenty successful in his first full season as Texas A&M's starting signal-caller, helping the Aggies to an 11-2 record and a trip to the College Football Playoff.

Additionally, the quarterback worked well in the Aggies' offensive scheme, becoming a Heisman Trophy contender late in the season, especially as Texas A&M marched with an 11-0 record down the stretch of the season.

Reed ended the 2025 season with 3,169 yards and 31 total touchdowns while completing 62.1 percent of his passes. However, now the second-year starting quarterback will have a new play-caller in Wiggins, and while the offensive structure is likely to remain the same, Wiggins will undoubtedly have his own unique tendencies.

And Wiggins highlighted how he has tried to work within the abilities of Reed and how the quarterback has gotten used to the new version of the Texas A&M offense.

"We're trying to tailor everything to his skill set," Wiggins said. "Now you see him doing some stuff and actually taking more command of the offense because there's more understanding of what it is, and a lot of that comes with experience and also time on the job, so he's continuing to build confidence through our practices."

Reed is now a veteran quarterback heading into his fourth season of college football, with 21 starts under his belt, which will be a benefit for him and for the Aggies throughout the 2026 season.

While the Aggies have plenty of talent around Reed, the team will go as far as his play will take them, and if Reed's talent, experience, and continued improvement over the offseason help him take another step, Texas A&M will be a tough team to beat.
