Luke Boyers’ three-run shot lifts the Frogs over the Red Raiders

The TCU Horned Frogs clinched a crucial series victory against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Sunday.

After being stymied on in a 7-1 loss on Friday TCU bounced back to grab a 4-2 victory on Saturday, setting up for what would perhaps be the biggest game of the season.

Sending out the 6-foot-7 freshman right-hander Mason Bixby, the Frogs took care of business in the 1st inning. Back-to-back strikeouts and a sliding catch in foul ground made by Luke Boyers would end the top of the frame.

With Sam Myers finding his way on base with a one-out walk and Anthony Silva drawing a free pass as well, Luke Boyers cranked a three-run shot onto the berm in right field to give the Frogs an early 3-0 lead.

After putting up a crooked number in the bottom half of the inning, TCU subsequently allowed one run in each of the next three innings that saw the Red Raiders erase the Frogs’ three run advantage.

In the 2nd inning, Owen Washburn doubled in Austin Green for Texas Tech’s first run of the game before Drew Woodcox halved the deficit with an RBI double of his own–this time in the 3rd. After a one-out single by Tracer Lopez, TJ Pompey knocked in the game-tying run with a double.

Immediately after the Red Raiders clawed their way back TCU’s offense found its spark again.

A leadoff single from Fisher Ingersoll got the ball rolling in the bottom of the 4th. Using his speed, Ingersoll made a head first slide into second base for his first stolen base of the season with Karson Bowen striking out simultaneously.

Up next was the freshman infielder Ryder Robinson who laced a single up the middle into centerfield knocking in Ingersoll as the go-ahead run to take a 4-3 lead. From then on, TCU held onto its narrow lead and saw out Sunday’s contest.

The Frogs got a fine start from Bixby who went 3.1 innings pitched and surrendered three runs on five hits and two walks. The lanky right-hander notched six punchouts before handing it over to Ben Hampton.

Hampton, who has struggled in recent relief appearances, pitched two clean innings where he allowed just two hits and struck out two Red Raider batters. Zachary Cawyer came in for 2.2 innings before allowing a leadoff double and a walk to start the top of the 9th.

With danger brewing, Kirk Saarloos turned to Caedmon Parker to close things out. The junior righty closed things out with two quick flyouts and getting a called strike three to end the game.

Sunday’s win sees the Frogs improve to 22-12 overall and 7-11 in the Big 12. The team will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Abilene to take on the Wildcats.
