On Tuesday, the TCU Horned Frogs (30-21, 11-10 Big 12) shut down their home slate for the 2023 season against the Texas State Bobcats (33-19, 15-12 Sun Belt). It'll be the final game played at Lupton Stadium until 2024.

Visiting Texas State is no slouch – the Bobcats have been flirting with the top 25 all season long, even cracking the rankings in April. Catch Texas State at TCU at 6:00 p.m. CT on ESPN+ or 88.7 FM KTCU. Fans are encouraged to enjoy the nice weather and cheer on your 2023 Horned Frogs one last time at Lupton Stadium.

Texas State Visits TCU For Final Midweek Game

TCU was eliminated from the Big 12 regular season title last weekend despite a sweep of Baylor. That doesn't mean this game is meaningless, as the Frogs aren't guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Tournament without a few wins ahead of Selection Monday (May 29). The Bobcats are also vying for a seat at the table, but may need to win the Sun Belt Tournament for the auto-bid.

The visitors from San Marcos are coming off being swept on the road by Louisiana, a series that may cost them the NCAA Tournament bid. The Bobcats know a statement win Tuesday night puts them back in the conversation.

The Frogs have not announced their starting pitcher, but Braden Sloan (2-3, 6.95 ERA) has been the most frequent Tuesday starter late in the season. Chase Hoover (1-1, 5.06) has also taken the midweek mound since the last major shakeup of the weekend rotation. Texas State starts RS junior Peyton Zabel (2-1, 4.94).

Sizing Up The Bobcats

All season long, Texas State has been a solid team both offensively and defensively. Last time they played TCU (March 14 in San Marcos), the Bobcats won 8-4. They also have two victories over Texas, one against fringe top-25 UTSA, and a series victory over ranked Southern Miss.

Last weekend, the offense was shut down by a terrific Louisiana pitching staff. TCU also left the bats at home on Friday and Saturday – a concern in their recent series against Texas and West Virginia. Three runs against Texas State isn't going to get the job done.

The Bobcats rank 46th in RPI this season (per D1Baseball). Against teams ranked 26-50 in RPI, TCU is 3-9 on the year (.250); against teams ranked 26-100, they are 7-14 (.333).

Three players on Texas State have 10+ home runs – second baseman Chase Mora (15), outfielder Jose Gonzalez (12), and August Ramirez (10). As a team, the Bobcats have hit the fifth-most homers in the Sun Belt Conference (77).

TCU third baseman Brayden Taylor is three home runs shy of the program career record. He has 42 career dingers and the record is 44 (Royce Huffman). Texas State has surrendered 67 home runs this season, sixth-most in the Sun Belt.
