As the regular season draws to a close, every game counts. Many of the Big 12 teams are within one to two games of each other. Standings are critical. The top four teams get a double bye in the conference tournament. Right now, Houston and Iowa State will most likely get two of those spots. The other two spots are up for grabs, especially after this week’s midweek games.

It took overtime on Monday night in Manhattan for Kansas State to get the much-needed victory over West Virginia as the Cats cling to hope of an NCAA invite. Kansas State won 94-90. West Virginia was down by as many as 25 points in the second half. K-State set an NCAA single-season record with its seventh overtime victory. Under coach Jerome Tang, the Cats are 12-0 in overtime games over the last two years.

Later Monday night, TCU hosted No. 15 Baylor. The two teams entered the game with identical 19-8 overall records and 8-6 conference records. Baylor was coming off of two straight losses. In a game where offense by either side was a rarity, TCU suffered the most. Down by 18 points, the Horned Frogs tried to claw their way back but still lost the game 62-54.

Tuesday started with No. 1 Houston handling Cincinnati. The Cougars had a 9-point lead at halftime and a 17-point lead early in the second half. The Bearcats chipped away and got within six points with under two minutes left, but Houston held on for the 67-59 win.

Then came the two upsets of the week. BYU rallied from 12 points down to hand No. 7 Kansas its first loss of the season at Allen Fieldhouse. BYU won 76-68. That was followed by another upset as Texas traveled to Lubbock. The Longhorns dismantled the Red Raiders in the first half, taking a 47-23 lead at halftime. Tech would outscore Texas in the second half, but it was not enough. Texas won 81-69.

In the Wednesday games, UCF got a road win at Oklahoma State beating the Pokes 77-71. And No. 8 Iowa State continued to show its dominance at Hilton Coliseum, defeating Oklahoma 58-45.

The conference’s NET ranking of 46.4 is the lowest of all leagues. The next lowest are the Big Ten at 59.9 and the SEC at 68.6

The Big 12 is the only conference with five teams in the top 25 and 10 in the top 50 of the NET rankings: 1. Houston, 8. Iowa State, 13. BYU, 14. Kansas, 16. Baylor, 30. TCU, 35. Texas Tech, 39. Oklahoma, 40. Texas and 45. Cincinnati.
