TCU Women's Basketball Pulls Off an Inspiring Win Over UCF

To say it has been a wild week for this TCU women's basketball team is an understatement. A few weeks ago, this team was ranked No. 23 in the country and was 14-0. In a few short days, injuries piled up forcing multiple forfeits against Kansas State and Iowa State. Open tryouts proceeded to get enough healthy players and four walk ons were added. Despite all that, Coach Mark Campbell and these women were resilient and pushed forward. Against all odds, they found a way to beat UCF 66-60.

With an entirely new starting five, Coach Campbell had to install a new offense. They went from their traditional pick and roll offense to a five-out motion. Campbell said, "We've had a whole bunch of late nights as a coaching staff studying, trying to figure out what we can instill in a couple-day window that compliments the group that's playing."

The Horned Frogs were without its top three scorers in Sedona Prince (21.2 ppg), Madison Conner (21 ppg) and Jaden Owens (7.8 ppg). The new offense went to work early putting up 27 points in the first quarter and leading by 12.

The second quarter was more of a struggle as the Frogs only knocked down three shots but were still clinging to a 33-31 lead. In the third quarter, history was made for TCU athletics. Sarah Sylvester, a walk on who played for TCU volleyball just a couple months ago, became the first TCU student-athlete to play varsity basketball and volleyball in the same season. She received a thunderous applause from the fans who recognized this massive achievement.

TCU found themselves trailing by five in the fourth quarter and scored on three consecutive possessions to cut the lead to 60-59. With a little over a minute to go, Victoria Flores gave the Frogs a 62-60 lead. Four clutch free throws by Agnes Emma-Nnopu sealed the win in the final minutes.

Aaliyah Roberson led all scorers with 17 points on 8-10 shooting and added four rebounds and a block. Sydney Harris came up big off the bench contributing 14 points and three triples.

This wasn't just any normal win. This is storybook stuff happening in Fort Worth. Coach Campbell said, "In some ways we're like America's team right now." They certainly captured their attention with Coach Campbell coming on Sportscenter to talk about the game.

TCU picked up its second conference win last night and they will hit the road to take on Texas Tech on Saturday at 2 p.m.
