Tennessee Pitcher Chase Burns Enters Transfer Portal

Rumors were circulating that Tennessee Volunteers pitcher Chase Burns wanted to transfer out of Knoxville, and he made things official this week.

The Tennessee Volunteers season just wrapped up about a week ago with a loss in the College World Series to the eventual national champion LSU Tigers.

The baseball program has been hit with lots of big things as the season came to a close. Recently, the team landed former Jacksonville State pitcher A.J. Causey. As said before, he can have lots of starts next season for the Volunteers with the dangerous breaking ball arsenal he brings. The next item of big news coming from Tennessee baseball was the announcement of Chase Burns transferring. ESPN reported that TCU is one of if not the top schools interested in landing him

Burns was a reliever for a lot of this last season with Tennessee. He was very successful with a high strikeout rate (114 in 72 innings pitched). His fastball has MLB-ready velocity clocking in at the 100+ mph mark at a relatively consistent rate. Despite this great play in relief, Burns began to turn up a notch in his play, especially towards the end of the season. The switch from starter to reliever seemed to spark something inside the sophomore right-hander. A captivating performance from Burns came against Stanford in Omaha. Burns pitched six innings and had nine strikeouts while giving up no earned runs on just two hits.

He also had an exceptional series against Southern Miss in the Hattiesburg super regional. Burns had five strikeouts in relief in 3.2 innings pitched throughout the two wins against the Golden Eagles that sent the Volunteers to Omaha. During that 3,2 inning stretch of play, he also allowed neither a hit nor a run. He was completely dominant. There is thought that great performances out of the bullpen like these lead him to desire a starting role again. This new dream may require him to seek that role on a team elsewhere.

Burns is undecided about where he is going.
