REACTION: UGA Forced to Make Change at Offensive Coordinator

Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken has accepted the same position with the Baltimore Ravens, with Mike Bobo taking over at UGA. What does it all mean?

Losing Monken is not ideal for the Dawgs. The offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach was the play-caller for the past three seasons, helped the team to its first national championship in 41 years, and backed it up with another one. The offense took big leaps behind Monken and quarterback Stetson Bennett IV in their three years together. The Dawgs beat Tennessee in all three matchups and averaged over 37 points per game against them along the way.

The quickness with which UGA announced the Bobo promotion shows that head coach Kirby Smart and Mike Bobo were fully prepared for this situation. The two were teammates as players at UGA, and Bobo served as the offensive coordinator at UGA before Smart’s arrival as head coach. The real question is how this affects the landscape of college football, the SEC East, and Tennessee.

Firstly, this shouldn’t have a huge impact on the landscape of college football. Georgia is keeping its brand the same with a coordinator who has coached at Georgia and even played at Georgia. The style of offense is not expected to change drastically, as Smart has become a coach in favor of building game plans based on the opponent, anyways. Because of this, Georgia’s fantastic recruiting should not change. Sure, there could be a player who wanted to play for Monken, but there is no reason that the player couldn’t fall in love with Bobo, too. He may not have the track record that Monken has from the past few years, but Georgia and their offense still do.

For the SEC East, Georgia is still the team to beat. Despite losing Bennett and other key pieces, Georgia’s work in recruiting and the transfer portal should allow it to bounce back from losing players in the offseason, which it proved it could do last season. The offense is still expected to be explosive.
