Hendon Hooker's Unique Development Timetable

Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker's injury timetable alters his NFL development, but it may be beneficial in the long term.

Quarterback Hendon Hooker has had a tumultuous journey. He began his collegiate career at Virginia Tech, earning the starting job before deciding his time with the Hokies was over. He transferred to Tennessee and lost the camp battle for the starting job, with Michigan transfer Joe Milton III taking the reigns.

Every step of the journey has been difficult, but it hasn't come without rewards. Hooker spent two prolific seasons with the Volunteers, tallying just five interceptions in that time. He finally began to get recognition but tore his ACL against South Carolina. His season was over, as were his chances of impressing scouts in on-field workouts.

He interviewed well at the Reese's Senior Bowl and NFL Combine, with several general managers going on the record saying they enjoyed evaluating him and are interested. Hooker seems to be the No. 5 quarterback in this draft class; it's difficult to imagine Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis dropping below Hooker.

While Hooker should be ready for his first training camp, he likely won't be able to install the complete system while rehabbing from his injury. Therefore, Hooker will likely be a backup during his first season in the NFL before his prospective franchise decides to throw him into the fire.

That may seem like a bad thing upon face value, but it actually benefits Hooker. He gets a "redshirt season" to learn the offense, develop chemistry with his teammates and coaching staff, and learn how to be a professional. There were some legitimate critiques about Tennessee's offense, and an extra season to iron out wrinkles would benefit Hooker.
