Tennessee's Pitch To Ryan Wingo

Programs are laying various pitches out to wide receiver Ryan Wingo. An important factor in his decision must be scheme fit, and Tennessee's system offers a natural landing spot.

Wide receiver Ryan Wingo has a lot of options. Tennessee, Miami, USC, and Notre Dame are in serious pursuit, laying out a rash of options for him. Not to mention, Wingo added Alabama and Georgia offers, planned a recruiting trip to Tuscaloosa, and visited Colorado and head coach Deion Sanders.

There's a lot to factor in with his recruitment; NIL and proximity are two important things to every recruit, and each program has a different appeal for both. Early involvement may be considered, and relationships will always be key.

However, scheme fit is an integral part of a pairing. Wingo's ultimate goal is to make the NFL, and different systems will require different things from him; Wingo must go to a coaching staff that maximizes him.

Tennessee has one of the most flexible offenses in college football. They changed rhythm between times during the season, pivoting between run and pass, quick concepts, and downfield shots. They have a fit for anyone but have already laid the foundation for Wingo.

He stands 6-2 and 200 lbs., looking like a linebacker on tape. Physicality is a primary component of his style, as Wingo shines when he gets the football in space and can create after the catch.

The Volunteers spread the field boundary to boundary, forcing defenses into elastic coverages. Therefore, the middle of the field has bigger windows allowing quick throws into open space.

Wide receiver Bru McCoy reaped the benefits of the quick game this season. He has a similar physicality to his game; McCoy measures 6-3 and 220 lbs. with a solid athletic profile.

He got plenty of opportunities on tunnel screens, quick slants at the line of scrimmage, and work at the boundary. He's capable of breaking a route off and hauling in a contested pass, but his primary job was to create against his matchup.

Wingo's game is similar. He can work downfield, but he shines when you allow him creativity. The fit into Tennessee's offense makes a lot of sense, and it's a key reason why they lead for him.
