Whenever a college football program is presented with a top-tier prospect from within the state, the goal is to bring them in and keep them home. The Tennessee Volunteers are employing that strategy currently with a prized in-state linebacker.

This defender is Edwin Spillman, a 6'1", 216-pound Nashville resident out of Lipscomb Academy. Spillman has been on the Vols' radar for a little while. The class of 2024 athlete took an unofficial visit to Knoxville in January of this year, with an official visit scheduled for June 16th.

Edwin has already garnered multiple Power 5 offers, including a few ACC teams in Florida State and Georgia Tech. Spillman had some interesting things to say when asked about head coach Josh Heupel's program. Of Tennessee, Spillman said, “Tennessee is and has always been in my top five. My relationship with the Tennessee coaches is awesome, and I am most communicating with coach BJ (LB Coach Brian Jean-Mary) and coach (Josh) Heupel.”

The Vols possess a key advantage in the Spillman sweepstakes that no other program in the country does. Edwin's brother, wide receiver Nate Spillman, signed with Tennessee in 2022 and is set to be a freshman at Rocky Top this Fall. Edwin acknowledged that playing with his brother in their hometown would be special.

Regarding what the experts are saying, Spillman is currently crystal-balled to the Volunteers, with Ohio State, another official visit he has coming this Summer, also labeled as a program with warm interest.

Spillman stated that he hopes to make a commitment decision sometime this Summer after his official visits, before his senior year. Tennessee appears to have the inside track on the Linebacker's services. Spillman is the No. 2 HS player in Tennessee, according to 247Sports, and the Vols are hoping he will keep his talents within the confines of the Volunteer State.
