No. 2 Texas baseball hasn’t found much success in midweek play lately, entering Tuesday on a two-game midweek losing streak after falling to Tarleton State and Houston.

That trend looked in danger of continuing against a red-hot Texas State team riding a seven-game winning streak. The Bobcats had also won four straight in Austin, part of a stretch in which the home team had not won in the series since 2022.

Both of those streaks ended Tuesday night.

Texas Baseball finally cashed in a midweek victory, holding off a back-and-forth push from the Bobcats to secure a 10–8 win Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

A gritty win and home run galore

It was chaotic and downright sloppy at times (to say the least), but for a team searching for midweek answers, it was enough.

But it didn’t start that way.

After a leadoff out in the first inning, Rashawn Galloway jumped on a hanging pitch and sent it over the left-field wall to give the Bobcats an early lead. Then a misplayed ball in the outfield led to two unearned runs and a quick 3–0 deficit for Texas.

But Texas answered immediately. Following a walk from Carson Tinney, Aiden Robbins crushed a two-run homer down the left-field line to cut the lead to one. An inning later, Ethan Mendoza doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3–3.

Starter Max Grubbs exited early after allowing three runs — only one earned — before left-hander Kade Bing stabilized things with three innings of one-run relief.

But Texas State kept the pressure on. Solo home runs from Ethan Farris and Manny Salas pushed the Bobcats back in front, 5–3, heading into the sixth.

But then, like most Texas baseball games this season, came quite the explosive inning.

Casey Borba smoked a solo shot, sparking a six-run outburst. Mendoza delivered a two-RBI double, Tinney followed with an RBI single and Anthony Pack Jr. capped the rally as Texas surged ahead 9–5.

Reliever Ethan Walker struggled in the seventh, allowing three consecutive doubles before exiting. Along with a passed ball and some pretty abysmal outfield play, the Bobcats trimmed the lead to one.

This time, though, the bullpen held.

Brett Crossland worked out of trouble in the eighth, and Mendoza added a key insurance run with a solo home run in the bottom half.

Cozart then shut the door in the ninth, retiring the side in order.

It was a promising midweek showing, considering the Longhorns' recent no-shows the past two weeks. After managing just two hits in its previous midweek loss, Texas finished with 11 on Tuesday.

Texas travels to Columbia this weekend to face South Carolina, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. CT on Thursday.
