Texas football: Colin Johnson says new offense will make teams 'pick their poison'

The senior Texas wide receiver is excited about what RPOs can add to his already-impressive game

RPOs have been all the rage in the past few years as the next step in offensive innovation and in 2019, Texas will throw its hat into the ring and join the trend.

The run-pass option is just what its name suggests, a quick read by the quarterback designed to get defenders out of position and force defenses to make more reads post-snap.

Texas coach Tom Herman is excited about what RPOs can mean for his offense, particularly how they can help take some hits off of quarterback Sam Ehlinger, whose physical run style often leads to more contact than most coaches would like to see on their quarterback.

Receiver Colin Johnson is also excited about the new concepts, believing that teams will have to "pick their poison" when it comes to either adding extra coverage on the dangerous receiver or loading up to stop the run.

It will be interesting to see exactly how much RPO we see from Texas as the Longhorns hope to add more a more explosive element to their offense to keep pace with the offense-heavy Big 12 .
